Flappy Bird Maker Removing Game App?

The Flappy Bird game has been a recent viral hit for a gamemaker from Vietnam, but new reports have surfaced that he is planning to remove the popular game/app from the iTunes and Google Play stores. The game can also be used on Kindle Fire HD, but with a special install per a third party game guide and File Expert HD.  We’ve played the game here and love it, although the highest score we’ve achieved (without hacks) has been 8 in our limited days of testing it recently.

So what has caused the recent-No. 1 bestselling game to warrant its creator to remove it?  That’s where the mystery starts. The story came on Saturday, from various sources including Forbes.com. They reported of developer Dong Nguyen’s tweets on Twitter which included:

“I am sorry ‘Flappy Bird’ users, 22 hours from now, I will take ‘Flappy Bird’ down. I cannot take this anymore.”

“It is not anything related to legal issues. I just cannot keep it anymore.”

“I also don’t sell ‘Flappy Bird’, please don’t ask.”

“And I still make games.”

The news is considered among some of the strangest in recent tech trends and reports, as previously there was news that Nguyen’s game was bringing in as much as $50,000 a day from advertising revenue in the game. There were no special in-app purchases, just the ad revenue on the free game, which involved tapping the screen to make a bird fly higher and navigate between pipes on the screen. There were no levels, but the game was considered amazingly difficult to grasp for some, who could only achieve high scores below 10.

Speculation since the game became popular was that there was some sort of gaming the system involved in order to boost the simplistic game up to the top of the app store charts.  Others wondered if there was some sort of legal/copyright issue with the game.

As of this report, it’s unknown what the reasons are behind Nguyen’s decision to bring the game down, but we are willing to bet there will be a lot of folks downloading the game on Sunday before it is supposedly removed from the app stores!
